Living Photography at Festivals

Not long ago we all enjoyed another Halloween with everything that goes along with it: decorations, candy, scary movies, and costumes. Did you notice that some of the parents were wearing costumes along with their children? I did, and there were some pretty unique ideas. What is it that makes us want to wear an alternative personality? Maybe being someone different for a while gives us an opportunity to act out a different life, or play in an alternative world, or just to escape the realties we all face every day.

Recently, I spent a day at the Carolina Renaissance Festival. It was a marvelous afternoon and a great way to engage people as a photographer while they explored a different time in history—many in full costume. Street photography is all about asking a stranger to pose for a photo. Sometimes it can be awkward and you need to be sure to provide them every opportunity to gain trust and confidence in you. In some cases, you will get an outright no. But, a person in costume will almost always be enthusiastic that someone appreciates their getup.

So there we all were, adults dressed as Londoners in the 17th century and loving every minute of it. What did I wear? Well, my kilt, of course!

Until the next session,

Steve
